New Polish Navy Vessels to Boost Mine Capability

Second Batch of Kormoran II for Delivery 2026-2027

As delivery of the first set of three new Kormoran II (Project 258) mine countermeasures (MCM) vessels is underway, preparation for construction of a second batch of three is starting.

A spokesperson from Polish shipyard Remontowa Shipbuilding told MON that “all companies are preparing for the contract execution phase, securing contracts for long lead systems and deliveries” for the new batch. Production of the first ship of this second batch “will start in spring of 2023, followed with the next two vessels in 2024”. These ships will be built to the same configuration as the final two ships of the first series, 58m long and displacing 850t.

Remontowa Shipbuilding is leading a consortium including OBR CTM naval technology centre and PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, after it was awarded a PLN2.5 billion ($560 million) contract in June 2022 by the Polish Armaments Authority for the second series. Deliveries are expected from 2026-2027.

Meanwhile the second ship of the first batch, ORP Albatros was handed over to the Polish Navy in August. “The vessel is awaiting availability of the OSU-35K [35mm air defence gun], which is government furnished equipment. All other systems are commissioned and delivered ready to use,” the Remontowa spokesperson stated.

The third ship, ORP Mewa, was launched in 2020 and is due to be handed over in November this year. “The ship is undergoing a final phase of acceptance tests following the yard’s own Ship Through Water, Harbour Acceptance Trial, and Sea Acceptance Trial activities. All systems are set to work and completed their integration tests,” the spokesperson said.

The first-of-class, ORP Kormoran, was delivered in 2017, following reactivation of the Kormoran II project in 2013, after Poland’s economic situation improved, but this vessel will not be equipped with the OSK-35K. Built by PIT-Radwar and Huta Stalowa Wola, the OSK-35K is designed to protect surface ships from aircraft and missiles and will also be fitted to the Polish Navy’s three new Miecznik-class frigates, in build at Remontowa.
