New Cypriot OPV

Israel Shipyards launched the OPV for protection of the Cypriot EEZ

Following an agreement signed in December 2015 between Cyprus and Israel, senior members of the Cypriot Ministry of Defence flew to Israel mid-September to attend the ceremony for the launch of a new Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) at Israel Shipyards’ facility at Haifa Bay. Representatives of the SIBAT (Israel MoD) as well as the management and employees of the company were also present during the ceremony.

With a displacement of 430t, an overall length of 62m and a maximum speed of 32kt (60km/h), the new OPV will be used by the Cypriot Navy to patrol and protect the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). To this end, it can carry up to 30 crewmembers plus a Special Forces unit, is armed with two Rafael Typhoon Weapon Stations, and is equipped with advanced radar, electro-optical payloads, communications systems including satellite communications, navigation systems, and command and control systems, amongst others.

According to Avi Shahaf, CEO of Israel Shipyards: “The project is of great importance for the company, and we invested our knowledge, experience and ingenuity in order to build and to supply this unique technologically advanced ship. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Cyprus Ministry of Defence for the trust they invested in Israel Shipyards in order to deliver this vessel.

The OPV is scheduled for delivery to the Cypriot Navy for the end of 2017.
