Keel Laid for Turkish Amphibious Vessel

Navantia’s Entry into Turkish Market

On 7 February, a keel-laying ceremony was held at the SEDEF shipyard in Tuzla, Instanbul, for the TCG ANADOLU, an amphibious vessel for the Turkish Navy designed by Navantia.

Based on the successful design of the JUAN CARLOS I for Spain and the ALHD, two of which have been sold to Australia, the design has been further developed by Navantia to accommodate Turkey’s requirements. The contract, signed in July 2015, calls for technology and knowledge transfer to Turkey through the provision of detailed plans, functional design and construction documentation. Also supplied under the contract are the five diesel generator groups developed by Fábrica de Motores and the integrated platform management system (IPMS) from Navantia Sistemas. The Spanish shipbuilder will provide a technical assistance team resident in Turkey for a period of five years to support the construction programme.

This contract marks Navantia’s entry into the Turkish market and also consolidates its position as a leading player in the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) vessel market. These amphibious vessels, which have the ability to project troops via landing craft, also act in the role of light aircraft carriers.
