Navantia to Build OPV for Royal Moroccan Navy

Creates 250 Direct Jobs Over 3½ Years

Navantia has won a contract with the Royal Moroccan Navy for design and construction of an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), the Spanish Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, announced on 8 January, during a visit to Navantia’s San Fernando shipyard.

The project will create some 250 direct jobs over the next three and a half years in the Bay of Cádiz, where another BAM-IS-class vessel for the Spanish Navy will also be built. The project has been actively supported by the Spanish government and effectively opens the doors to future contracts for similar units, which essentially means more hours and more jobs for Spain’s naval industry.

Last April, Morocco launched a tender for construction of an OPV, to which Navantia responded in August, along with several other international bidders. A team from the company visited Morocco to directly negotiate technical and commercial issues, resulting in Navantia being awarded the contract

Navantia supplied a number of patrol boats and a corvette to the Royal Moroccan Navy in the 1980s: the new contract opens up that path once more.
