Signs MoU With Huisman Equipment
On 27 November in Rotterdam, on the back of the NEDS conference taking place the next day, Navantia put more pressure behind its bid for the Royal Netherlands Navy’s WALRUS-class attack submarines replacement programme.
Recognising the wealth of expertise and experience inherent in the Dutch maritime industry cluster, Navantia organised a conference, attended by over 50 companies, during which it outlined its plans for involving Dutch industry in its bid to replace the WALRUS-class boats with a design based on its S-80-class, currently under construction for the Spanish Navy.
In addition, Navantia also took the opportunity to sign a Memorandum of Undertanding with Huisman Equipment, under which the two companies have agreed on a joint investigation of the potential for establishing submarine construction and assembly activities, based on the S-80 design, in the Netherlands.
Huisman Equipment has extensive experience in designing and building complex and demanding maritime and off-shore systems and its yard in Schiedam is well suited as a location for submarine construction. Both parties consider their mutual expertise very complementary and have agreed to work on a more detailed plan as a first step towards a strategic partnership in the event Navantia may be selected by the Netherlands Ministry of Defence.
