Discussions Include Burden-sharing and NATO Operations
NATO Deputy Secretary General, Rose Gottemoeller, discussed German contributions to NATO missions and operations as well as fairer burden-sharing with members of the nation’s Parliament during a visit to Berlin on 26-27 September. The meeting was arranged at the invitation of the Foreign Policy Chairpersons of the Parliamentary Groups of leading political parties. During her visit, she also had meetings with high-level officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence.
She delivered a keynote address at an event hosted by RAND Europe and the German Marshall Fund of the United States on 26 September, entitled “Security Through Deterrence: A Need for New Vision.“ She discussed how changes in the security environment and new technologies can impact NATO’s defence and deterrence.
The Deputy Secretary General also participated in a high-level roundtable discussion hosted by the German Council on Foreign Relations on the same day. The discussion focused on strategic stability in Europe following the demise of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, due to Russia’s deployment of SSC-8 missiles. She stressed that NATO allies remain firmly committed to the preservation of effective arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation.
