600kw Engine Enhances Operational Mobility and Agility
Both WFEL and Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) have selected Rolls Royce Solutions UK to supply its MTU engine for Boxers destined for the British Army’s Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme.
The MTU 8v 199 TS21 engine is proven in military applications. With a power output of 600kw, it allows for enhanced operational mobility and agility, and a higher electrical load. The British Army’s Boxers will be the first to be equipped with this engine variant, delivering 70kw more power than the MTU engines in previous versions.
The engines (523 of them) will be produced in Rolls Royce’s East Grinstead facility and delivered directly to David Brown Santasalo, another key UK partner in WFEL’s Boxer programme, which will integrate them into the complete Boxer powerpack assemblies. First delivery of the engines will take place later this year.
For its Boxer production, RBSL will assemble and test the Boxer powerpack (transmission, engine and cooling system) in Telford. Integration into Boxer vehicles will then take place at WFEL and RBSL facilities in Stockport and Telford respectively.
David Eaton, Director – Governmental at Rolls-Royce Solutions UK, commented “We have been working energetically with our industry partners for a number of years to reach this point, and are very much looking forward to delivering our engines to power these state-of-the-art, British-built infantry vehicles.”
