MSPO 2022: Poland Decides on Apache

Surprise Announcement Suggests up to 96 Aircraft in Prospect

In an announcement that appears to have been unplanned – or, at the very least, unanticipated – Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak used his Twitter account on 8 September that Warsaw is buying up to 96 AH-64 Apache helicopters. That number would make Poland the second largest Apache operator on Earth, after the US Army.

Boeing had been competing in the Kruk programme, which aims to replace the current fleet of about 30 Mi-24D/V attack helicopters. Bell Helicopters’ AH-1Z Viper was also in the frame, but the community at the MSPO exhibition in Kielce did not anticipate a decision in the near future. The announcement appeared to take Boeing officials at the show – who had been briefing the AH-64EV6 with a MUM-T capacity – somewhat by surprise. A Boeing statement, which also appears to have been quite hastily put together – averred that “[…]during the procurement process, Boeing established significant cooperative partnerships across Polish government and industry. Our partnership with the Polish Armaments Group [PGZ] in particular will continue to expand as we implement training and sustainment efforts with local industry.”
