MSPO 2021: ROSOMAK Artillery Reconnaissance Vehicle Unveiled

Specialised Variant Featuring EO and Radar Sensors

Rosomak SA unveiled an artillery reconnaissance variant of its eponymous wheeled armoured vehicle during MSPO 2021 in Poland this week.

The ROSOMAK AWR [Artyleryjski Wóz Rozpoznawczy] is a specialized variant of the ROSOMAK family, produced in Poland under license from Finland’s Patria. The variant was designed to provide ground optoelectronic reconnaissance and support to the RAK 120mm self-propelled mortars (a wheeled variant is also based on the ROSOMAK’s chassis) and other artillery units, such as the KRAB 155mm howitzers, WR-40 rocket launchers and DANA 152mm howitzers. It can be also tasked with reconnaissance of terrain and enemy forces.

AWR features two systems: an on-board observation and reconnaissance set (PZOR – Pokładowy Zestaw Obserwacyjno-Rozpoznawczy), composed of a battlefield radar (SRC’s SR HAWK)  and an opto-electronic head (Flir’s TacFlir 280-HD) mounted on a 4m mast; and a portable surveillance and reconnaissance set (WZOR – Wynośny Zestaw Obserwacyjno-Rozpoznawczy), composed of the Safran Vectronix’s GonioLight V-Ti device for detection, recognition, identification and acquisition of targets, JIM LR binoculars and Vector laser rangefinder. AWR has three working stations for commander, opto-electronics operator and radar operator.

This variant is armed with a 7.62mm machinegun mounted in an RCWS and is equipped with smoke-grenade launchers. Maximum speed of the 24t vehicle is 100km/h, with an approx. 500km range. According to the manufacturer, the AWR can detect a tank-sized vehicle from a distance of 32km and smaller vehicles from 21km, while human-sized targets can be detected at 12 kilometres. Smaller vehicles can be detected from a distance of 21 km.
