APACHE and T-129 Both in Prospect
There is a debate raging in Morocco, if local press reports are anything to go by, over the selection of an attack helicopter for the Moroccan Army.
A visit by Gen. Abdelfattah Louarak, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, to Washington, DC in April is believed to have included discussions in principle regarding the possibility of acquiring an unspecified number of Boeing AH-64 APACHE helicopters from the United States. An agreement to supply would make Morocco the second African APACHE operator, after Egypt.
More recently, in June, a Moroccan delegation visited the Ankara headquarters of Turkish Aerospace (TAI) to discuss the possible purchase of T-129 ATAK helicopters. The interest in the Turkish aircraft is understood to have been reinforced by reports of its impressive performance in Syria. There is also an outside possibility that Morocco could benefit from some form of cooperation with Turkish aerospace companies to support and stimulate its own capabilities, if such an agreement were to be arrived at.
