Fifth Batch of AFVs in Modernisation Process
The Romanian MoD has awarded a contract to General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) for a fifth batch of PIRANHA III 8×8 Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFV) for the Romanian army.
The contract was signed at the end of last year and forms part of the army’s plan to modernise its wheeled AFV fleet. Currently the fleet comprises approximately 1,000 vehicles, mostly licence-built versions of the Soviet BTR series. Some of the previously delivered PIRANHA IIICs, in Romanian service since 2006, have been up-armoured with kits from Plasan Sasa.
Over 11,000 PIRANHAs in multiple variants have been delivered to armed forces in every corner of the globe.
