Mobile, Decentralised Software for NH90 Training

Telespazio Develops Virtual Maintenance Trainer for German Navy

Telespazio (a joint venture of Leonardo and Thales) is to provide the German Navy with a virtual maintenance trainer (VMT) for its NH90 helicopters, the company announced on 7 July.

To be used for training and practicing such tasks as inspection, fault diagnosis or maintenance and repair procedures, classroom equipment and a significant number of computers have been provided to Naval Air Wing 5 at Nordholz and the International Helicopter Training Centre at Fassberg. Telespazio VEGA Deutschland and Telespazio France jointly developed the software solution, which is installed on all training computers. Designed from the outset to be used on laptops, the software supports flexibility in terms of training location and timing. A number of didactic resources allow maintenance procedures and activities to be trained and learned without a permanent instructor presence. The resulting decentralised, mobile and flexible training facility provides every possible opportunity for operators to continue effective training even in an environment of restricted movement and home-working conditions as is currently the case.

Combining an NH90 simulation with a detailed, interactive representation of the aircraft’s components and external test equipment, the software allows for free-play simulation and is capable of executing approx. 2,500 individual maintenance tasks, as detailed in the Interactive Electronic Technical Publication. It also provides a database of over 1,200 malfunctions, which serves as a comprehensive and realistic basis for a variety of inspection, diagnosis and repair tasks.

Fully networked classroom computers mean there is interaction between instructors and students, making teamwork possible while working on training tasks. In addition, each classroom has three large touchscreen monitors for detailed explanations by the instructor.
