Programme Edges Towards Implementation
Having begun the programme definition phase in 2013, the Chilean Army appears now to be set to implement a Mid Life Update (MLU) modernisation programme for its LEOPARD 2A4 fleet next year.
The Chilean Army acquired a total of 132 LEOPARD 2A4s (upgraded to 2A4CHL standard) from surplus German stocks in 2007, with an additional eight for use as spares. The negotiations for a further 100 LEOPARD 2A5s began in 2013 at the same time as the planned update to bring the current fleet up to the A5 standard.
Mönch understands the MLU will include an upgrade to the turret, including electrical turret drives and a digitisation programme, as well as improved modular armour, a remote control weapons station and a thermal camera. The Army has been negotiating with Rheinmetall, KANT, and RUAG Defence but as yet no final selection appears to have been made.
