Groundbreaking motorized continuous zoom lens addresses market shift towards small-pixel, next-gen infrared imaging

MKS Instruments, Inc. announced on April 16 the Ophir SupIR 10-135mm f/1.8 Motorized Continuous Zoom MWIR Lens. Launched at SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing 2025, this compact, high-performance lens is designed for next-generation 1280×1024 SXGA cooled MWIR detectors with a 5µm pixel pitch. The lens delivers superior image resolution and long-range detection for security and surveillance and defense thermal imaging applications.

The new SupIR 10-135mm f/1.8 MWIR continuous zoom lens ensures precision for surveillance, reconnaissance, UAVs, UGVs, RCWS, and industrial inspection. It features a 14x continuous zoom, extended detection beyond 17km for NATO vehicle targets, high Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) for highest imaging system quality, and an athermalized optical design for stability across temperature variations. Its rugged design includes high-performance coatings for durability in extreme conditions.

As cooled infrared technology advances, systems require optimized optics that can fully enable higher-resolution sensors while maintaining a compact footprint,” said Dr. Kobi Lasri, General Manager of the Ophir Optics product line at MKS Instruments.

The Ophir SupIR 10-135mm f/1.8 lens represents a breakthrough in high-resolution MWIR zoom optics, bridging the gap between performance and portability. With unmatched clarity and extended range, this new lens pushes the boundaries and sets new standards in thermal imaging.”

The SupIR 10-135mm f/1.8 lens includes a continuous zoom adjustment from 2.67° Wide Field of View (WFOV) to 37.7° Narrow Field of View (NFOV), a 90mm front diameter, 129mm length, and a weight of only 780g, making it both powerful and compact for demanding applications.
