Milrem Demonstrates THeMIS UGV to Italian Army

Launches New Assessment and Analysis Programme

Milrem Robotics has recently demonstrated its THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) to the Italian Army and launched a new programne to assess and analyse the implementation of intelligent systems into the army’s doctrine, the company announced on 3 November.

The demonstration showcased THeMIS with the Milrem Intelligent Functions Integration Kit (MFIK), a generic add-on which provides such autonomous functions as waypoint navigation and ‘follow me,’ also applicable to third-party UGVs.

The company also launched its Intelligent Systems Implementation Analysis and Assessment (IS-IA²) programme, designed to help armed forces implement intelligent systems effectively. IS-IA² consists of three steps: requirements analysis; tailoring solutions; and solution implementation and evaluation.

IS-IA² provides armed forces support from initial planning to full implementation and post-implementation analyses of intelligent and robotic systems with (NATO standard) concept development and experimentation methodologies. This enables customers to get support and solutions for any step in the process,” commented Jüri Pajuste, the company’s Defence Research and Development Director. “With years of experience in [robotics and autonomous systems] experimentations and related system integration, Milrem Robotics is in a great position to be a technology partner and kick-start an innovative robotics and autonomous systems evaluation program to create or enhance new military capabilities.”

The company recently delivered four THeMIS UGVs to the Dutch army, increasing the service’s fleet to six units. Milrem Robotics is the system integrator, conducting all systems integration – including third-party weapon systems – onto the vehicles.

To date, THeMIS has been delivered to nine countries, of which seven are NATO members, including France, Norway, the UK, and US. The company also recently launched the Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle, intended to support mechanized units. Finally, Milrem leads iMUGS, an EDIDP-funded project to develop a European standard architecture for UGVs and their management system, including cyber defence solutions, demonstrating the advantages of unmanned systems for enhancing defence capabilities.
