Developments Supported by ONR
US Marines recently experimented with new applications for the Microsoft HoloLens holographic computer during Spartan Emerging Technology and Innovation week at Camp Lejeune, NC.
A number of developments sponsored or supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) were trialled during the event, including the Interactive Tactical Decision Game (I-TDG), a web technology-based application using an augmented reality headset that allows trainees to conduct ‘what-if’ scenarios in a simulated environment. ONR is particularly keen on improving and accelerating the development of decision-making skills at all levels of command, but particularly at the small tactical unit level.
Potential applications for the HoloLens are growing apace – the armed forces of Australia, Israel and Ukraine are already developing specific applications in addition to the US. The technology lends itself to adding significant capability in the increasing number of augmented reality solutions being developed for training purposes.
