Sixth Customer for M4 Since 2014 Launch
Saab announced on 5 September that the Australian Army – a long-time user of the CARL-GUSTAF system – has become the sixth customer for the enhanced M4 multi-role weapon system since its launch in 2014. Deliveries are scheduled for 2020, the company stated.
The new version retains the effectiveness and versatility of the proven weapon system, introducing a number of enhancements, including a lighter weight design (<7 kg), a round counter and improved safety, coupled with intelligent features such as compatibility with future intelligent sighting systems and programmable ammunition. Collectively, these features offer significant operational improvements for the soldier – in addition to which the M4 is fully backward compatible with all ammunition types. The CARL-GUSTAF has seen extensive operational service with the Australian Army: moving to the M4 weapon represents continued modernisation of this important lethality system.
“With the introduction of the M4 version, the Australian Army will have a weapon with the latest technology and improved ergonomics, providing an increased tactical flexibility to deal with most situations on the battlefield,” stated the head of Saab business area Dynamics, Görgen Johansson.
