Handover Follows Successful Testing
Leonardo has completed work on the Al Taweelah, the fourth Ahmad el-Fateh-class fast-attack craft it has been upgrading for the Royal Bahrain Naval Force.
The vessel was handed over at a ceremony in Mina Salman, following successful completion of an integrated sea acceptance test. The ship has been given a new combat management system, and, as part of the deal, Leonardo will also be supplying training and logistics support.
The upgrade completes development work on a six-ship contract signed in 2015. At that stage, the company did not publicise the specific vessels it would be working on. In addition to the four FACs, it has also supplied similar upgrades to two corvettes. That work was completed in 2018. All six ships were originally built by German shipyard Lürssen in the 1980s.
