Leonardo Combat Management Systems for New Italian Submarines

First Submarine CMS in Leonardo Portfolio

Leonardo has signed a €150 million subcontract with Fincantieri to equip the Italian Navy’s first two Near Future Submarines (NFS) with combat management systems, the company announced on 26 February, marking the first occasion on which Leonardo has supplied a CMS for a submarine.

The first two U212 NFS are due to be commissioned in 2027 and 2029, while the original contract covers options (as yet unexercised) for two more. In addition to the newly-designed and developed CMS, Leonardo will also provide a simulation and training laboratory at the Navy’s Submarine Centre in Taranto, a package of logistic support, including staff training, and a set of spare parts. The NFS build on the U212A (TODARO-class) design, while featuring a range of technological advances. Four U212A submarines entered Italian Navy in 2006.

The contract is a strategic development for Leonardo in the naval sector. By adding a submarine CMS to its portfolio, the company broadens its offer in the submarine market. With commonalities between submarine and surface vessel CMS, Leonardo expects to exploit synergies, with investment in innovation benefitting both product lines.
