LAAD 2019: RUAG Focused on Tactical Comms

TAN – A Node for Comms, a Bridge for Technologies

RUAG has been focusing visitor attention on its Tactical Access Node (TAN) during LAAD 2019 in Rio this week.

On the battlefield and in humanitarian relief operations, communications are fundamental, and their integration can pose significant challenges when confronted with devices and technologies ranging from analogue to encrypted digital systems.

When it comes to integrating communication technologies and different manufacturers’ equipment, RUAG’s Tactical Access Node (TAN) resolves the problem gracefully, while maintaining the encryption of each system without compromising security. This simple system offers terminals for command posts (TAN) and lightweight, compact terminals for vehicles: the Tactical Vehicle Switch (TVS).

The system permits integration of military communications equipment from different manufacturers in a simple manner, allowing for rapid integration in the field to create multiple mini-networks for supporting simultaneous tactical communications. Because TAN can integrate different generations of technology, when a force seeks to acquire modern technologies, it can do so gradually, without having to replace entire existing communications inventories at one time.

During disaster relief operations, TAN functions as the bridge between military and civil organisations, enabling advanced military systems to communicate smoothly with the wide variety of civil systems typically used by law enforcement, emergency services, medical and utilities operations and local government agencies, including mobile phones, analogue telephones, and VGA video cameras. TAN can also provide a local wi-fi network to an area where commercial wi-fi has been disabled.

TAN hosts tactical all-IP communications, voice inter-operability, tactical telephony, tactical secure messaging and tactical network services, with interfaces such as satellite, Ethernet, WLAN, GSM/LTE, radio terminal adapter, analogue telephony, Eurocom, E1, SHDSL, USB, VGA, serial and energy entry/exit, thereby enabling the operator to create a full node-based network.

For vehicles, RUAG offers the Vehicle Communications Kit (VCK), which includes the TVS to integrate the vehicles’ voice and data communications systems, controlled from the Tactical Operator Panel (TOP). The TVS can integrate tactical radios, intercoms, video networks, sensors and actuators, WAN connection and vehicle systems.

The TVS kit satisfies a wide range of requirements, scalable from the smallest tactical vehicle to a large personnel carrier. Other subsystems can also be integrated during the life of the vehicle, thanks to the open architecture. The Ethernet/IP nature of the TVS databus makes for easy integration of modern vehicle subsystems. Similar to TAN, TVS can integrate existing IP radio networks with analogue or serial interfaces.
