Telespazio Brasil will Provide 150 Images Per Month
Ahead of LAAD 2019 Leonardo, through its subsidiary Telespazio Brasil, signed a contract with Petrobras, Brazil’s semi-public multinational oil corporation, for satellite monitoring of oil rigs in the Campos basin north of Rio de Janeiro.
The 14-month contract, which aims to detect oil spills from any of the 50+ oil platforms in the exploration and production areas, includes the supply of and average 150 images per month from the COSMO-SkyMed constellation of advanced Earth observation satellites, as well as specialised technical services available 24/7. The satellites are the only ones available capable of providing day and night information in all weather conditions with a high review frequency, thus ensuring coverage of the entire area and of an additional 40 critical locations every 48 hours.
Telespazio Brasil, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, has been active in the Brazilian space community for over 20 years. This most recent contract represents fresh success in the use of COSMO-SkyMed imagery data, already used in Brazil for monitoring Amazon deforestation and for safety, agricultural and defence applications. The four satellites of the constellation, which constitute the world’s first dual-use observation system, monitor the entire planet using high-resolution X-band radar. In the near future a second generation of satellites are to be launched, setting new standards for space-based observation systems in terms of precision, image quality and flexibility of user service, Leonardo stated.
