Introducing Fourth Generation SandCat into South America: SandCat M-LPV & StormRider

Launched in 2005, Plasan‘s SandCat evolved into a broad family of vehicles, fielded in over 16 countries across five continents. Well-regarded because of its proven field-tested reputation for reliability, durability, safety, and mission flexibility, the Plasan SandCat is a global standard that other light armoured vehicles strive to achieve.

Increased Mine-Protection

Joining the range in 2019 are the all-new SandCat M-LPV (Mine-resistant Light Patrol Vehicle) and the StormRider models – the first new vehicles based on Plasan’s 4th generation SandCat architecture.

The new armoured floor design achieves a higher level of underbelly mine protection without the usual added weight and height. The SandCat M-LPV maintains the SandCat’s compact dimensions, easy access 5-door design, and sub-10t GVW, while adding STANAG 2a/2b mine protection for all 8 occupants. The StormRider has new independent suspensions, All-Wheel-Drive and integrated CTIS for carrying 10 soldiers with uncompromised 4×4 Tactical Mobility for a sub-12 tonnes gross vehicle weight. 

Protection

Peripheral protection is modular and configurable between STANAG 2 and STANAG 3 (or equivalent) – subject to payload requirements. Firing ports permit the crew to fire their weapons from the safety of the protected cabin. The interior design accommodates many communications systems and other equipment. Two-zone air-conditioning is standard and options include independent heating, NBC filtration, fire-suppression and situational awareness systems as well as manual or remote-controlled roof-mounted weapons.

Design Elements

The high attention to detail and ergonomics – typical of SandCat – continues in the new M-LPV and StormRider designs. The updated classic SandCat look now offers more opportunity for localised customisation. New heavy-duty door handles open the doors with unprecedented ease for armoured vehicles. Inside, dual combat-locks ensure doors stay safely closed, even after a blast event. Floating floors, footpads, and eight Energy Attenuating (EA) blast seats protect the occupants and even more importantly keep them comfortable over long missions. The insulated interior is spacious enough to accept integration of any equipment a user could need.

While the SandCat’s distinctive glass shapes are optimal for wide fields of view, the entire design is the result of optimising geometry and materials to maximise space, payload, protection, and minimise weight.

Low Cost of Operation

The SandCat Family of Vehicles offer capabilities usually reserved for very expensive military vehicles by using commercial components where possible. This cost-effective package has a well-proven reliable drivetrain that is easily serviceable and has global support. Plasan can provide a full ILS package with training for users and technicians, and support the fleet locally. Other options include on-board diagnostics, a digital user manual, and repair guides built in to a touchscreen mounted in front of the commander.

The new SandCat M-LPV and StormRider are in accord with the latest requirements for light-armoured tactical vehicles – according to NATO STANAG requirements and MIL standards.

In addition, SandCat M-LPV and StormRider have a USA / EU Driveline Engine and a combat proven Survivability System. These are already present in hundreds of vehicles fielded and thousands of Plasan Survivability Systems deployed worldwide.

Found in the new variants is Plasan’s experience in “kitted-hull,” combat-proven, Integrated Survivability Systems (ISS) at all protection levels of defence for automotive systems with Plasan’s comprehensive knowledge of global industry-military standards and regulations.

Plasan’s kitted hull design is ideal for local production. Through technology transfers to Latin American industry, local manufacturing, assembly, integration, maintenance and service is possible.

The new StormRider is the latest member of the SandCat family, built around the same rugged Ford components.

Accept No Imitations

The SandCat M-LPV and StormRider bear the “mechanical DNA” of the original SandCat. There are many who attempt to copy the design and even the name of “SandCat.” However, these lack the surety of a Plasan armoured vehicle.
