Korean Navy Receives First DAEGU-class Frigate

Rolls-Royce MT30 Gas Turbines Power New Vessels

The first DAEGU-class (FFX-II) frigate has been formally handed over to the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) by the nation’s defence procurement agency, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

Ships 1 and 2 of the eight-vessel class are being built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, with ships 3 and 4 to be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries SNSD. Rolls-Royce has been contracted to power the first four vessels with the MT30 gas turbine as part of a hybrid propulsion system specifically designed to enhance the frigates’ anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. Turbines for ships 2-4 are due to be delivered in the second half of 2018.

This fourth-generation gas turbine has been selected in Combined Diesel Electric Or Gas (CODLOG) configuration for the DAEGU-class and the Royal Navy’s Type 26 GLOBAL COMBAT SHIP. MT30s are also in service on the US Navy’s FREEDOM-class littoral combat ships and ZUMWALT-class destroyers, the Royal Navy’s new QUEEN ELIZABETH-class aircraft carriers and have been selected for the new Italian Landing Helicopter Dock.

Rolls-Royce also provides the controllable pitch propellers for the RoKN frigates and four MTU 12V 4000 M53B engines per vessel. The MTU gensets for the second FFX-II vessel will be delivered later this year. The engines have a mechanical output of 1,650kW and, as an integral part of the CODLOG propulsion system, their purpose is to provide both the electric power for the electric propulsion (E-motor) as well as the electric power to the switchboard for the vessel’s electrical load (onboard power).

The MTU engines are delivered in partially knocked-down (PKD) condition to STX, who assemble them in South Korea.

“We congratulate the Republic of Korea Navy on their first DAEGU-class frigate. It’s really exciting to be part of DSME and HHI SNSD’s build programmes. We are proud to be a part of revolutionising Korean naval history with the DAEGU class – the largest and most capable frigate in the RoKN to use a single gas turbine in a compact package, made possible by the modern hull design and power of the Rolls-Royce MT30 GT – in its first application outside the UK and US markets,” commented President of Naval Marine, Rolls-Royce Defence, Don Roussinos.
