MONS talks to BMT Design about their key areas of expertise and their involvement in Australian programmes
During Pacific 2017, MONS talked to Pete Behrendt, Managing Director of BMT Design and Technology, to get a sense of what the company does and how it has contributed to the ongoing Australian naval programmes: “BMT is an independent naval consultant that provides defence platform design and support.”
This includes a wide variety of services, especially in the naval architecture domain with services such as surface ship design and support, specialist naval platforms design, upgrade and life extension, submarine design and support as well as specialist submarine design support. “The extent of what we do includes, for instance, providing support to our customers for their national shipbuilding models to help them understand what the workforce needs to look like to carry out their programmes, how many people will be needed, and what organisational structure they need for the programme office to be efficient,” says Mr. Behrendt.
In Australia, BMT provided support for skilling Australian engineers in the context of all the upcoming shipbuilding programmes. “This involved organising exchanges across Commonwealth countries to bring best practices around the world,” continues Mr. Behrendt. “We also provide consulting regarding asset performance, to see how a particular class of ship is performing, and analysis of alternatives during a competitive bidding process,” Mr. Behrendt concluded, “which is something our customers particularly appreciate.
