Jenoptik Brings World First to AUSA 2017

600 Amp Modular Generator

Jenoptik develops and produces electrical energy systems for the on-board power supply of wheeled and tracked military vehicles, including intelligent energy systems, which are ielded in the LEOPARD 2 MBT and PUMA and BOXER vehicles.

Premiering at AUSA 2017 in Washington DC, Jenoptik brings a new modular air-cooled generator to market fitting neatly in the 400-600 Ampere gap of the company’s generator product family covering then a power range from 200 to 1.000 Ampere.

Today’s non-linear battlefields make high mobility and power a critical success factor of military operations leading to flexible vehicle platform deployment supporting all different operation purposes thus defining the energy requirements of each vehicle category.

In order to enhance these electric systems of the future, Jenoptik introduces this next generation generator with 400-600A performance range with a high share of standardised parts. Being designed as a modular capable system, hardware modules are easily expanded/upgraded on demand with an open interface that fits current and future vehicles and various applications. By introducing a modular system, Jenoptik’s design is open to standardised interfaces, be it type of drive (belt, direct), fastening, regulator position, plug connection, and standard busses so it can via its modular interface access, e.g. existing engine power, installation space and climatic conditions

Air-cooled generators are particularly compact, achieve world-class efficiency levels and are suitable for all applications. Thanks to its compact and modular design, the SAM 600A allows low risk integration and testing for military applications, keeping process costs down. Air-cooled technology also can be adapted to other vehicles quicker.

The 600A generator closes the 400-600A (~11-17kW) portfolio gap at 600A and is capable for use from light truck to an Infantry Fighting Vehicle, offering more power and being more reliable via new design elements.

Development of a modular design consists of standard components (e.g. rotor, stator), modular components (e.g. housing, mechanical interface) and interconnection of hard- and software, while the design challenged the company in terms of power density with air cooling, dimensions and weight (diameter 230mm and 300mm long at less than 40kg), cost-optimised design, small effort for adaptations (new interfaces) and time, which Jenoptik was able to master.

According to the company, the customisable 600A generator offers more power than its competitors and is more reliable aiming at a MTBF of 6.000 hours (MTBF). Jenoptik furthermore says it will just have needed 12 months to develop, design and test a prototype to get ready for serial production by the end of 2019.

Jenoptik Inc. will be distributing the highly robust and extremely energy-efficient 600A in the US for American needs, while the generator will be produced in Essen, Germany. If it meets the desired attention, Jenoptik plans to expand production to its facility in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

To meet rising energy requirements of military vehicles, Jenoptik develops, manufactures and produces high-voltage energy systems, highly robust and extremely energy-efficient, now also as a family concept 400-600 Kilowatts, with the first (600A generator) hitting the market in October 2017 at AUSA.

Jenoptik have been manufacturing generators for over 50 years and has great hopes in success by introducing an air-cooled generator at this performance level to the US market.
