ISDEF 2017: Diamond in the Rough

Diamond Age offers increased & lighter protection to armed forces, SOF, and police

Diamond Age is the second recepient of the MONCH Newcomer Award (MONA), delivered by MONS for the first time ever this year at ISDEF 2017. Diamond Age’s winning argument was the development of a bastion helmet and an armour plate built with Armacer, a ceramic material engineered exclusively for use in ultra-weight armour systems.

The bastion helmet is augmented with an ultra-lightweight carbon fiber and ceramic strike-face. “Reading some research we realised that there was evidence soldiers are often hit in the same spots by bullets in the field, that is, the base of their cranium and their forehead,” Jake Ganor, Director of Diamond Age, told MONS. “The ceramic parts have been placed in those spots for better protection.”

They are also easy to remove and store. The helmet protects against fragment simulating projectile, M8, M855 and M193, amongst other weapons.

The armour plate has a reduced backface signature. “The combination of carbon fibre and a special foam absorb the shock of the impact, therefore mitigating behind-armour blunt trauma effects,’” continues Mr Ganor. It is rated for three shots minimum and Mr Ganor indicated that the use of the new ceramic material will bring the weight down to 1.7 kilogrammes.

The products are production ready and will be launched within the next month or so,” concludes Mr Ganor. “We are presenting the product for the first time here at ISDEF and have already received a lot of interest from potential customers.”
