Indra Takes on Larger Role in Eurofighter AESA Radar

Participation Now Covers all Life Cycle Phases

Indra has become Spain’s national representative in development of the AESA radar for Eurofighter, working in a consortium with HENSOLDT, the company announced on 4 August.

Indra is already the second largest avionics supplier to the Eurofighter programme and is now consolidating its role in the project to augment that aircraft’s capability in German and Spanish service by providing one of the world’s most sophisticated AESA radars. An additional long-term goal of the programme is to consolidate national sovereignty over the radar’s development and the company is therefore taking on a key role alongside HENSOLDT in all system design phases, preparing to ramp up its industrial participation in development. Indra will lead development of key functionalities, taking advantage of its expertise in EW, operating modes and the new technological capabilities built into in the radar.

The new E-Scan Common Radar System MK. 1 (ECRS MK1) will provide top-tier capabilities to German and Spanish Eurofighters. The system will drastically improve the aircraft’s operating capabilities and self-defence systems, bolstering air-to-air and air-to-surface identification and detection, increasing capacity to resist attempts to interfere with its systems, using countermeasures based on the latest-generation electronic defence techniques. The radar will also feature electronic disturbance and listening capabilities.

Indra’s participation in the new program will encompass all life cycle phases, subject to the current contract, from design and development subject to production and future operation, development and support. The contract will allow Indra to create long-term highly-skilled jobs in addition to reinforcing its expertise and role as a key supplier in the airborne sensors field and its role in leading the sensors pillar within the FCAS programme.

In addition to the CAPTOR radar and the PRAETORIAN defensive aids sub-system (DASS), Indra is a key supplier to the Eurofighter in development of its communications subsystems, flight and weapons control, navigation, engine and other utility controls, among other equipment. In the same vein, Indra solutions are part of the simulation and training systems, while in the operational phase, they are a benchmark for improving platform availability.
