Indra and UPM Training Next Generation Experts in Cyber Defence

Indra CYBER RANGE Platform Tests Competence

Indra and UPM (the Technical University of Madrid) have been training the next generation of cyber defence experts, using the same platform used by officers of the Joint Cyber-Defence Command, NATO and other armed forces and a number of EU police forces.

Students face some of the challenges inherent in a terrorist or enemy state attack on their own country’s companies or basic services. This has been achieved in an extremely realistic environment, made possible by use of Indra’s CYBER RANGE platform.

Students from various UPM courses, including the Master’s in Cybersecurity degree, conducted an exercise in forensic analysis, in which they had to investigate an attack and collect all possible evidence; the Master’s degree students also conducted a penetration or black box ‘pentesting’ exercise, identifying network vulnerability, as well as another on steganography, or detection of hidden information in digital files. Indra’s platform incorporates gamification techniques to promote competitiveness and speeds up learning by adapting the test to the level of each participant.

The use of state-of-the-art smart tools such as CYBER RANGE is the only possible way to train, in time, the huge number of cyber experts required in coming years. It is estimated that in 2022, Europe will have a shortfall of 350,000 specialists; the global number soars to 1.5 million.
