Indonesian Coast Guard Patrol Vessels Receive Terma Radars
Danish company Terma is to supply the radar for five Indonesia Sea & Coast Guard (KPLP) patrol vessels, Regional Naval Sales Manager for Terma Asia Pacific Baranikumar Subramaniam told Mönch at Indo Defence 2016 in Jakarta on 2 November.
The key element of the KPLP requirement is for speed of delivery in order to meet an increasingly urgent need for improved surveillance, navigation and helicopter control functionality, according to Subramaniam. Consequently, the company’s SCANTER 6000 solid-state X-band 2D radar is being installed in parallel in the vessels’ home ports, where it is being integrated with Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine VISION MASTER automatic radar plotting and display (ARPA) systems.
Enhancing KPLP capabilities in detecting and tracking multiple small targets in adverse conditions – including weather-induced high clutter – the radar will crucially offer greatly enhanced capabilities in helicopter control, which is currently a concern for the service, according to industry sources at the show.
The regional market is currently buoyant, according to Subramaniam. “Tensions over activities in the South China Sea, coupled with the fact that many fleets are ageing and in need of upgrade and capability enhancement mean that our solutions are in increasing demand,” he told Mönch at the show.
SCANTER 6000 has also recently been selected by the Royal Malaysian Navy for the mid-life upgrade programme currently under way for its two LEKU-class frigates. Again being integrated with the VISION MASTER ARPA solution, the radar will also provide data feed to the BAE Systems NAUTIS II combat management system.
