Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon Launched from IAF Aircraft
The Indian Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) announced on 24 December it has successfully tested its indigenously-developed Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) in a launch from an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft.
Designed to destroy runways, bunkers, aircraft hangars and other reinforced airfield infrastructure, the 120kg-class weapon has a standoff range of around 100km, according to defence sources.
The IAF’s Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) carried out an earlier test from a JAGUAR aircraft in May this year. The development project, which has cost Rs crore 56.58 (U$8.3 million), received government approval in September 2013.
