IMDEX Asia’s Highest Participation Yet

Highlights Importance of Guaranteeing Defence & Security in the ASPAC

IMDEX Asia 2017, the 11th iteration of the show, has seen the biggest turn out since its beginnings. The record number of global stakeholders included: 73 VIP delegations from 45 countries/regions, 25 Chiefs of Navy, 10 Vice-Chiefs and Director-General of Coast Guard and 17 high-level representatives from other navies and coast guards.

It also recorded an all-time high number of business meetings (630) taking place between these VIP delegations and the 230 participating companies from 29 countries, as well as 10,600 trade visitors from 69 countries/regions and 123 media personnel representing 79 media outlets, of which nearly three quarters belong to international media organisations. IMDEX Asia 2017 was also marked by a special event: The Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) 50th Anniversary Celebration. To celebrate this event, 28 foreign warships from 20 navies took part in the show’s Warships Display.

With 230 participating companies from 29 countries present at the show to network, forge partnerships and foster collaborations, IMDEX Asia featured the largest ever exhibition in the show’s history. This included increased participation by both returning and new exhibitors, spanning over a wide spectrum of sectors, from shipbuilding, armament, and propulsion systems to maritime cybersecurity, imaging, and simulation. MONS features two stories from MONS correspondent Guy Torreman presenting the main displays of the show here and introducing some of the newcomers here.

About this year’s record-setting exhibition, Guy Stitt, President of AMI International, said: “We have been returning to IMDEX Asia since the very inception of the show because it is unique as the only gathering of navy leaders of its kind in the region, while the Warships Display enables people to see the real world applications of systems and equipment by real operating navies. We are happy because this year’s show offered a wide selection of exhibitors ranging from large corporations to small businesses, showcasing new technologies and innovations that cover the full gamut of naval and maritime systems, and which are all very crucial for us to better understand what the future is going to look like.”

Commenting on the increased focus on technology and innovation this year, Chew Men Leong, Deputy President and President (Defence Business) of ST Marine, said: “This year’s IMDEX Asia has seen an increase in the crowds as well as visits by high level delegations, and it is very encouraging to see many taking a greater interest in future naval solutions, and what we have to offer. IMDEX Asia is a must-attend show where many of the navies from Asia-Pacific {ASPAC} and around the world come to look at the latest technologies and capabilities, and it is a good opportunity for us to showcase our offerings, while also establishing and maintaining key touch-points for the future.”

Further highlighting the importance of ensuring maritime defence and security in the ASPAC were the two conferences hosted during IMDEX Asia 2017. The International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC 2017), organised by Experia and co-hosted by the RSN and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), brought together Chiefs of Navy and Directors-General of Coast Guard from around the world for an afternoon discussion on “Safe and Secure Seas: A Vision for a Maritime Region.” The conference focused on the development of a cooperative security approach to create critical capabilities that will enhance the safety of the complex maritime landscape. Dr. Alix Valenti, Editor-in-Chief of NAVAL FORCES and correspondent for MONS at IMDEX Asia, gave an overview of the themes discussed in a news story published here.

Held over two days (17 and 18 May), the International Naval Engineering Conference @ IMDEX Asia (INEC@IMDEX Asia 2017) was co-organised by Experia Events and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and supported by the Defence Science and Technology Agency and the Republic of Singapore Navy. It brought together representatives from navies, commercial and military ship operators, designers, shipbuilders, manufacturers, defence-related organisations and academia to discuss new developments and challenges faced by the naval engineering industry. It focused on four main themes: Flexible platforms; underwater technology; effective support solutions, such as reducing the cost of ownership, supply solutions and using the benefits of modularity; and, multiplying effect, that is, network-centric operations, cooperative engagement, smart weapons, unmanned vehicles, operations other than war. “2017 has been a milestone year for IMDEX Asia with record participation by Chiefs of Navy, Vice-Chiefs and Directors-General of Coast Guard, representatives from navies and Coast Guards, as well as foreign warships. Together with record VIP delegations and trade visitor attendance, and participating companies, these milestones underscore the expanding role of IMDEX Asia as a truly global platform for facilitating strategic discussion around maritime defence and security”, said Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director of Experia Events. “Recognising the strategic importance of these discussions, future editions of IMDEX Asia will also evolve to meet the growing needs for our global stakeholders, with a stronger focus on leveraging emerging technologies and innovations to address pressing maritime defence and security issues.”
