IDEX: Raytheon in the UAE

Raytheon talks about the success of its ESSM and RAM programmes in the region

At IDEX/NAVDEX 2019, Mönch speaks to Raytheon about the success of the Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) and the Evolved Seasparrow Missile (ESSM) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Raytheon’s RAM has been introduced in the UAE since the mid-2000,” says Jeff Meyer, Senior Manager, Business Development Naval and Area Mission Defence at Raytheon, “and it is being delivered to the UAE navy to protect its ‘Baynunah’ class corvettes.” The ‘Baynunah’ class will benefit from the protection of the RAM Mod 3 Block 2, with initial deliveries made in 2017 and the scheduled completion for 2020. In the region, Raytheon is also delivering RAMs (Block 2) to the Qatari and the Egyptian navies, part of a $242 million contract signed in May 2018 for foreign military sales to the governments of Qatar, Egypt and Turkey. “We also support training and maintenance for the RAM systems,”continued Mr Meyer.

The UAE’s ‘Baynunah’ class will also be armed with Raytheon’s ESSM, indicates Gerard Hueber, VP Business Development Strategic and Naval Systems at Raytheon. In the region, the ESSM will also arm Saudi Arabia’s future Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC), built by Lockheed Martin. “We have a very good long-standing relationship with industry partners in the region, such as Abu Dhabi Ship Building,” said Mr Hueber, “and the ESSM is also a very successful consortium with 16 members, including Japan, Thailand, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, contributing to our success in the region.”
