IDEX 2017: PERLUCOR Showcased

A New Era of Transparency for Ballistic and Scratch Protection

Since CeramTec-ETEC GmbH has introduced its newly developed transparent ceramic PERLUCOR®into the market 2 to 3 years ago, growing interest has shown its versatile utilization in a lot of different applications. PERLUCOR’s excellent physical, chemical and mechanical properties have been the major reason to be successfully implemented.

For the military market, the development of lighter and thinner transparent armour systems by using CeramTec’s transparent ceramic as part of the composite system, is well on the way through various transparent armour system manufacturers. Weight reductions for systems tested according to STANAG 4569 or ATPD are in the range of 30 to 60 percent. Another application within the military field has shown up during the past year. Especially in sandy and rocky areas such as Afghanistan, vehicle windows had to suffer because of stone hits as well as scratches caused by the wiper blades moving across the sand and dust covered front window.

Pre-damaged ballistic windows because of stone hits have lost as well some of their ballistic performance. This will create an unknown risk, while the vehicle is used in combat. CeramTec-ETEC has developed a new solution to protect windows against such type of wear. By laminating a thin layer (<1,0mm) of PERLUCOR on top of the front glass layer, the window can be protected successfully against such damages. Similar protection will be applicable for optical equipment such as periscopes, telescopes, camera lenses, infrared imaging equipment and other sensors.

Flat as well as curved protection lenses made out of PERLUCOR transparent ceramic can help to increase the lifetime of such high valuable as well as sensitive optical equipment.

CeramTec-ETEC is exhibit transparent test panels as well as a scratch and stone hit protected panel at stand at their stand at stand no. 08-E02 within the German Pavilion.
