IDEF 2017: SOM, the Next Generation Cruise Missile

Multi-Mission, Multiple Tactical Choices
The Stand Off Missile (SOM) is an air-to-surface cruise missile family to address highly defended stationary and moving land or surface naval targets. Its modular design supports operational flexibility.

The first flight test of SOM took place in 2011 and serial production was started in 2013 under a contract between ROKETSAN and the Turkish Ministry of Defence. An initial batch of missiles, including Captive and Dummy Training variants and the Test and Programming Unit, has already been delivered and the serial production qualification phase completed.

A contract for the development of a smart munition compatible with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which will be based on existing SOM technology, was signed in 2012 between ROKETSAN and the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries, followed by SOM-J development activities and platform integration studies in collaboration with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in 2014.

SOM provides for mission flexibility due to its open architecture software. Composite materials are used within its structure and the radar absorbing material enables low visibility. It features smaller size and weight than systems with similar ranges (250+km for SOM and 200+km for SOM-J.) The missile’s operational use will be enhanced by in-flight re-programming and networking capabilities to be enabled by integration of a datalink.
