Detects and Disrupts Multiple All-Directional Threats Simultaneously
Immediately prior to the Dubai Airshow, which opened this morning, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) unveiled the comprehensive and innovative SCORPIUS EW system on 11 November, claiming it is the world’s first such system to be capable of detecting and disrupting multiple threats simultaneously.
Based on active electronically-scanned antenna (AESA) technology, SCORPIUS enables a new generation of EW capability. Using AESA multi-beam capability, the system scans large volumes of airspace, for example, for threats and deploys narrowly-focused beams to disrupt multiple threats, in multiple frequencies and from multiple directions – simultaneously. Able to target a wide range of threats from aircraft to ships and from missiles to low-probability-of-intercept radars, SCORPIUS effectively disrupts their operation across the electromagnetic spectrum.
The system’s technological breakthrough is characterised by unprecedented receiver sensitivity and transmission power, far exceeding those of legacy EW systems, according to IAI. This allows SCORPIUS to detect multiple threats, of different kinds, simultaneously, from dramatically increased distances, and to address each threat with a customised response. The range of configurations includes:
- SCORPIUS G – a ground-based system designed to detect and disrupt ground- and airborne threats. Highly mobile and deployable by vehicle, SCORPIUS G represents a new category of air defence system – ‘soft-kill’ air defence, creating a protective dome over a large area, to neutralize a broad range of threats.
- SCORPIUS N is dedicated to defending ships against advanced threats, including OTH cruise missiles, UCAVs and airborne imaging radars. The systems’ long range provides early detection and targeting of threats, essential for effective protection.
- SCORPIUS SP – a self-protection pod for combat aircraft – and SCORPIUS SJ – a standoff jammer that disrupts enemy aerial and ground-based electromagnetic operations across a vast sector – are both aircraft-mounted solutions.
- SCORPIUS T, which was unveiled last month during the international ‘Blue Flag’ air force exercise in Israel, provides EW training for pilots, emulating a variety of modern air defence systems simultaneously from a single platform and capable of supporting training for 5th-generation aircraft.
