IAI Solution for Predictive Monitoring of COVID-19 Patients

AI, Big Data and Machine Learning Technologies Leveraged

As reported in both MilTech 5/2020 and 6/2020, Israeli industry has been swift and aggressively competent in leveraging existing expertise and technological competence, harnessing them to solutions to assist the national and international struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) announced on 8 June that it has developed a predictive model that predicts progress in the medical status of COVID-19 patients.

Leveraging the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) expertise, the model was developed by scientists and engineers in the company’s Innovation Center in the Missiles & Space Group, using information from the Sheba Medical Center cloud database and technologies surrounding ‘big data’ and machine learning solutions. The system’s predictive capabilities can alert medical staff to possible deterioration in patient condition, thus enhancing patient care, flagging cases with higher chances of medical escalation and significantly improving patient outcome.

Dr Einat Klein, Chief Innovation Engineer at the Missiles & Space Group, observed “IAI makes extensive use of tools such as machine learning, big data and AI as part of its routine operations. The innovation team of our group, which specializes in missiles and satellites, has leveraged its know-how experience to help medical staffs predict patients’ conditions. In this way, physicians can provide better treatment to COVID-19 patients at the hospital. IAI joined the battle against COVID-19 with multiple technologies developed over the past few weeks. These technologies help the medical professionals, the patients, and the hospitals. We plan to continue helping the healthcare system in line with the changing needs.”

The development clearly shows the benefits of taking a broad view of technologies developed for one role and repurposing them to another. IAI’s Missiles & Space Group’s pertinent experience includes work on the ARROW 2, ARROW 3 and BARAK 8 air defence systems, loitering missiles, the DROR national communications satellite and as co-builder of the BERESHEET spacecraft.
