Saab Receives Order for Advanced Simulators from FMV

Saab has received an order for new laser simulators from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) worth SEK95 million with deliveries during 2017.

The Swedish Army is upgrading and modernising its training system to meet future functional requirements on a national level. The upgrade entails that the Swedish Armed Forces will be able to utilise the international standard, which is used by other Nordic countries as well as several European NATO countries and the US Army in Europe.

According to Saab, the version sold is the very newest version of the BT46 laser simulator.

The BT 46 Mk II simulator has a new, improved laser transceiver for both close and long ranges, and can simultaneously operate with different code standards. It can be configured for all types of vehicles with a different vulnerability defined for each target. The system can be configured for all types of vehicle with different vulnerabilities defined for each target. The crew in the vehicle receives audio feedback related to the effect of incoming rounds and the sounds of hits. The effect of an engagement is indicated via strobe light and/or pyrotechnics.

The Wireless Target System (WTS) is multi-purpose target system that can be used with vehicles, target lifters, and bunkers, and is very easy to install. That means fewer parts and less time spent preparaing for an exercise. The system can be used both for 1-way and 2-way laser simulators. The BT 46 Mk II simulator has a new, improved laser transceiver for both close and long ranges, and can simultaneously operate with different code standards. The system is used for both precision gunnery training and combat/manoeuvre training in fighting vehicles, helicopters and vessels. It has a Windows-operated system and open communication architecture.

The BT 46 is a role fit replacement for the tactical class 4 laser designator. It provides an eye-safe laser range finder and an embedded precision simulation capability with improved range and performance. The fire engagement is the same as with the real weapon. The 1-way simulator system supports every version of the ABRAMS Main Battle Tank and the BRADLEY fighting vehicle, and can be adapted to other fighting vehicles. The target system consists of Wireless Detector Units (WDU) that detect MILES laser codes fired by the opposing forces.

The vehicle laser transmitter is a small, wireless, compact unit that simulates the 120mm and 25mm main gun and the coaxial machine guns from a single transmitter that automatically changes MILES ammunition codes and ranges based on the crew’s weapon selection. The laser transmitter also simulates the TOW missile. The Canister Laser Transmitter (CLT) simulates the Canister ammunition used in the ABRAMS tank.
