I/ITSEC 2016: Cubic’s Innovative Software Applications in Neurotechnology

Cubic’s Intific combines NeuroBridge with latest in visualisation and gaming engines for next-gen solutions

Cubic Global Defense’s (CGD) subsidiary Intific, a business unit of Cubic, has neuroscience software capabilities for assessment and environment creation.

Intific, Cubic’s hub of innovative software and game-based solutions development, includes advanced software applications in neurotechnology with the capability to leverage cutting-edge technologies from the gaming industry with its NeuroBridge software platform, which creates highly realistic experimental environments for research, training and entertainment. The combination of the NeuroBridge software with the latest in visualisation and gaming engines creates highly immersive, realistic and reliable virtual environments for future-generation training, experimenting and testing.

The capability to have robust and realistic visual quality for experiments in neurofeedback quantification of behavioural performance allows you to make stronger claims in lab work, better reflecting what happens in the real world,” Tom F. Nugent III, Senior Director of Neurotechnology, New Media and Training Solutions at Cubic/Intific, said. “With NeuroBridge, we’re providing an opportunity for next-generation neurofeedback by allowing the use of biophysiological state measurements to seamlessly modulate and change a simulation experience or game, in real-time to the subject or player. This closed-loop capability allows for a truly immersive experience for data collection, customization and tailoring to a targeted audience.”

Intific highlights the following neuroscience software applications powered by NeuroBridge:

  • HOCUS FOCUS: Unveiled for the first time at the 2016 Google X Gadget Fiesta, HOCUS FOCUS is an Intific-developed game that combines virtual reality, the Unreal gaming engine and NeuroBridge in a world of wizards and spell craft. Individual players’ brain activity influences gameplay as they grab materials needed to create potions.
  • N-SCOPE: This application combines the state-of-the-art Vive virtual reality hardware system with an electroencephalogram (EEG) headset that tracks players’ focus in a shooting gallery simulation. Using NeuroBridge, a meter is built up based on the players’ focus; and once the meter is filled, it can activate slowing of time in the gameplay to score better on accuracy. As a result, slowing the time can improve accuracy on fast moving targets.
  • Memory Enhancement Tools: Developed with the support of Department of Defense (DoD) funding, this software creates a virtual world as an experimental test bed to enhance memory through real-time measurement of biophysiological data and application of brain stimulation during napping to improve performance.
