Huntington Ingalls Delivers REMUS 100 to German Navy

Additional Units Increase and Enhance MCM Capabilities

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has delivered additional REMUS 100 UUVs to the German Navy, expanding the current fleet of the type used for mine countermeasures (MCM) operations, the company announced in late December. HII collaborated with J Bornhöft Industriegeräte GmbH, exclusive provider of REMUS to German customers, to deliver this technology to the user.

The new UUVs feature advanced core electronics and endurance of up to 12 hours. Built on the REMUS Technology Platform, the vehicles are open architecture and have enhanced modularity. The German Navy previously acquired REMUS 100s after extensive trials and has been using them successfully for the last seven years for area search, debris field mapping, and topographic ocean floor mapping in water down to 100 metres. The UUVs are equipped with side-scan sonar to create images of the ocean floor and increase search efficiency in low visibility areas. Germany is one of 12 NATO nations (including the US) using the REMUS 100.

[The German Navy’s] new REMUS 100s will provide the latest technology to assist them in conducting their MCM operations,” commented Duane Fotheringham, President of HII Technical Solutions’ Unmanned Systems business group.
