Coast HP3R Rechargeable LED Pen Light

MONCh Gear Box Product Review

There is an abundance of high quality pen lights out there with a fairly common set of characteristics. The Coast HP3R rechargeable LED pen light is an exception with its famous twist focusing mechanism, which the company calls Universal Focusing Optic System.

I have had the opportunity to use the this pen light over the last few months and was impressed by its functionality and technical features.

Manufactured from lightweight aluminum, weighing 1.8oz, it is 6in long, includes a removable clip and is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery or a pair of alkaline AAA batteries. The rechargeable battery on high output setting (this light comes with two output settings: high and low) provides 245 lumens (lm) for 1.5 hours at 305 feet. Using Alkaline batteries, it illuminates 180ft at 86lm for two hours. On the low output setting the rechargeable battery provides a beam out to 102ft at 26lm for six hours and the alkaline battery lasts 26 hours at 10lm at 62 feet.

The HP3R providing an extremely clear bright white light that does not have any dark rings that you often get with other flashlights, thanks to the quality of the LED and the design of the reflector.

Coast’s own Universal Focusing Optic System is smooth and easy, helping the user to adjust the beam from spot to flood, providing an extremely clear bright white light that does not have any dark rings that you often get with other flashlights. Thanks to the quality of the LED and the design of the reflector, the HP3R can throw a focused beam of light 305 feet and when dialed back for a wider flood pattern, it casts an 8ft diameter beam of light at a 6ft distance. Impressive for such a small flashlight.

Turning the flashlight on and off is achieved with a rubberised tail cap, and switching from high output to low output is accomplished by clicking the tail cap a second time.

As stated in the title, this flashlight includes a Li-Polymer rechargeable battery, that contrary to other lights does not need to be taken out, but is hidden behind a retractable protective shroud. A quarter turn and slight pull of the barrel near the tail clip unlocks the Pro-Tek charging port. All Coast products come with a great many accessories (it all comes in an impressive packaging with accompanying literature, foam cutouts, bags for the chargers and a colour printed reference chart), in this case an AC, DC and USB adapter, which provide enormous flexibility in recharging the light. Coast calls this the Flex Charge System.

Furthermore, it is is impact amd weather resistant and was tested and rated to ANSI/FL1 standards. We threw ot from a second story window and had it out in heavy rain, without breaking the light.

Versatility is important when in use over extended periods of time, so, while the lithium battery allows for more light it comes at the cost of less time, and alkaline batteries give less light but last a lot longer especially on low output. Having used Axion‘s small portable solar charger I was able to power this technologically sophisticated pen light up in no time amd re-use it. Having used the HP3R for several months it has become my go-to-EDC light.

The pocket clip sits a little too high.

My only criticism is that the pocket clip sits a little too high. Other than that, if you are looking for a solid rechargeable pen light, then MONCh Gear Box highly recommends the HP3R. Big things do come in small packages!
