Hensoldt’s Latest Periscopes & Optronic Masts

Periscope depths
Hensoldt’s display at UDT 2017 presents the company’s latest periscopes and optronic masts. NAVAL FORCES sat down with Roland Puscher, Product Manager for Maritime Systems, to discuss what these products offer to the navies. “Our optronic masts and periscopes are available to the navies in any combination they wish, whether periscope and optronic mast or two optronic masts”, says Puscher.

Two periscopes are visible on the Hensoldt stand: The SERO 250 and the SERO 400. The 250 is the optimal periscope for retrofitting in submarines undergoing an overhaul, whereas the 400 is fully integrated in the command system and can be fitted on new submarines. Both have low level light TV (LLLTV) cameras and a 2-axis line of sight stabilisation, but the 400 camera combines colour HDTV camera and high resoolution digital still camera, whereas the 250 only has a high resolution camera.

There are also two optronic masts on display:  The Optronic Mast System (OMS) 150 and the OMS 200. Both systems have LLLTV and colour HDTV camera, as well as 3-axis line of sight stabilisation. The OMS 150 however also has a short-wave infrared (SWIR) camera. “Customers who chose to have only optronic masts, as opposed to a combination of optronics and periscope, often chose to have both the OMS 150 and OMS 200,” continues Puscher,” as this allows to have a back up in case one fails, but it also allows to have one that is less conspicuous and can be used in attack-type situations”.

Hensoldt is now working on image processing  of HDTV video cameras to be able to make 360°.
