Hensoldt Delivers IFF Systems to Elta

For Integration into Civil, Military ATC/Air Defence Networks

Hensoldt is to deliver an undisclosed number of its MSSR 2000 ID and MSR1000I radars to IAI subsidiary Elta in a deal valued at around €10 million ($10.15 million).

The company has signed several contracts to supply the equipment, which meet NATO’s Mode 5 IFF (identification friend of foe) standard. Hensoldt says the systems will be integrated into both civil air traffic control radars as well as “military air defence radars operated by several customer nations.”

Mode 5 uses encryption which means it offers additional layers of security over the previous IFF iteration, Mode 4. IFF systems interrogate transponders on board aircraft and can thus quickly and accurately determine the identity and position of friendly aircraft. Hensoldt is under contract to upgrade military IFF systems for Germany, France and the UK and has delivered ground equipment to other NATO nations.
