Hensoldt and Academia Collaborate on Future Radars

Sensor House Deepens Partnerships with Researchers

Researchers from the University of Ulm have completed four research projects, commissioned by Hensoldt, that have investigated aspects of digital radar technology.

The researchers, led by Professors Christian Waldschmidt and Christian Damm, gave presentations on their work to Hensoldt staff recently: the company intends to incorporate the results into its product portfolio.

Digital radars can carry out different discrete tasks at the same time, using the same hardware. A single installation could conduct reconnaissance while carrying out communications, for example. This will reduce the amount of equipment required at airports, without having a negative impact on performance. “Fully digital front-ends and multi-static radar systems that can be realised with them will expand the possibilities for sensing in the same way as the introduction of AESA radars has done in the last 10 to 20 years,” the company stated.

The work is part of a long-term collaboration between the company and multiple research institutes, which supports young scientists and seeks to identify opportunities for co-operation. “The pace of technology development in electronics and sensor technology is increasing all the time,” Dr Jürgen Bestle, Hensoldt’s Chief Technology Officer, observed. “That’s why it’s extremely important for a sensor house like Hensoldt to stay in close contact with research and absorb new findings.”
