Helikon-Tex COBRA D-Ring Tactical Belt

Product Review

Helikon-Tex is well-known manufacturer of top quality BDUs, water- and windproof as well as comfortable. Widely used by law enforcement and security personnel, armed and special forces, Helikon-Tex has gained a reputation of a high class military gear provider, and MONS Gear Box is happy to present here the first review of one of their products: The Helikon-Tex COBRA D-Ring Tactical Belt.

The genuine AustriAlpin COBRA D-Ring buckle is undoubtedly of great quality, and the single layer of webbing is of high grade very tough “industrial” type (thick and made of a super strong nylon), sewn neatly to form the permanent loop attaching it to the buckle. The thread so far has been substantial and tight.

The lose end of the webbing is treated (presumably by heat) to form an almost solid plastic end which is easy to thread through the buckle, and has not frayed so far.

Once threaded through the buckle and cinched to fit, there is little chance of the lose end slipping free.

Wearing this fitted to the belt loops of any trousers (belt width: 1.75in, 4.4cm), one can attach small amounts of gear to it, being stiff enough to hold light pouches etc without buckling too much. The belt has an excellent fit, although one has to remove one end to actually thread it through belt loops. The AustriAlpin COBRA D-Ring FX45 quick release buckle is easily adjustable and without holes, quick on and off, so to say.

Helikon-Tex chose to go with the AustriAlpin COBRA Buckle, allowing for central positioning and preventing the D-Ring from getting squeezed against the webbing and thereby guaranteeing easy handing. The locking mechanism is patented and a one sided opening of the lock is not possible, even if the buckle is under load. COBRA quick releases have been tested according to MilSpec guidelines by the company. According to AustriAlpin, the COBRA buckle is made from 7075 aluminium alloy and features solid brass and stainless steel components, so they do not rust.

Although clearly stated that this belt should not be used for climbing or LSE (Life Saving Equipment), to review it, that is exactly what we did (to calm the producer: We did so entirely at our own risk, and this should not be repeated). Our testing for anything that should hold is hanging ourselves from a branch, and the belt has held true (up to 150 kilogrammes).

So far the MONS testing team can honestly say that we fully expect to get a lifetime out of this belt. What really had us going is that this finally is a D-Ring belt that is both comfortable to wear and yet rigid enough for carrying gear.
