Harris ANVIS Night Vision Goggles Receive FAA Certification

Harris Partnered with Aviation Specialties Unlimited

On 6 February, Harris announced its F4949 Aviator’s Night Vision Imaging System (ANVIS) has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Standard Order Authorisation (TSOA) certification, providing FAA and other users a quick and clear determination that the product is certified for civil aviation use.

Before the TSOA certification programme, night vision goggles (NVG) were certified under a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), which was specific only to the applicant and the aircraft that the STC was to be used toward. NVG manufactured through Harris’ TSOA certified facility no longer need an STC and have FAA authorisation to be used in an approved NVIS.

The Harris team undertook the year-long process with long-time partner Aviation Specialties Unlimited, resulting in the certification of F4949 variants, image intensifier variants and the ANVIS low-profile battery pack. These variants are for both rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft and use the latest Generation 3 night vision technology, including white phosphor technology.

“Harris corporation has supplied more aviation night visioning systems to the military and civil aviation market than any other night vision supplier, and this certification further validates our commitment to quality products designed for the unique rigors aviators face during nighttime flight,” commented Vice President and General Manager for the Harris night vision business, Erik Fox.
