GPEC 2018: Prepare to Prevent Risks

PsyOps

Psychological Operations – in NATO  circles often abbreviated PsyOp – are gaining much attention, not only in the military. Explaining that PsyOp in the military “allows adequate intervention to avoid escalation,Gerd Kuehnl of Pass-Medientechnik GmbH, said they receive much attention in the public security domain, allowing the development of new functions and capabilities, as well as the integration of new equipment. One such example is called LSA-X, a battery-powered, high-performance loudspeaker system. According to Kuehnl, the device has an extreme long-range capability that is a key requirement for today’s PsyOp. MONS was told that the device has an “excellent speech intelligibility at distances of 500 to 1,000 metres.”

Kuehnl pointed to the device’s operational endurance; it is one of the highest performing battery-powered systems worldwide. Modern battery management allows operational battery life to be extended from six to 24 hours; stand-by use is quoted at approximately 120 hours.

An important safety feature is the three-stage AP-LOCK system that protects users during commissioning and use from health risks caused by excessive noise.

In responding to the military’s expanding PsyOp requirements, Kuehnl confirmed that unmanned aircraft will play a greater role in the future, carrying loudspeaker payloads that perform in Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTH). He suggested to MONS that industry capabilities are currently best matched to fulfill the needs and noted that opportunities in this field are expected to be expansive in the upcoming years.
