New GIRAFFE 4A & ARTHUR for Sweden

Saab Receives Swedish Order

After announcing it will consolidate its airborne and surface based radars into the new business unit Radar Solutions, headed by Lars Tossman, Saab reported it received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to develop and maintain its armed forces’ artillery and weapon locating capability, via Saab’s GIRAFFE 4A multi-function radar and life extension of the ARTHUR artillery locating system.

The current business units Airborne Surveillance Systems and Surface Radar Solutions, both within Saab’s business area Surveillance, will merge to become a single unit 2019. By merging the businesses, Saab aims to target market needs even further and maximise synergies within the operations. The new business unit will combine all activities for airborne, ground-based, naval and fighter radars, aligning synergies in both research and development and marketing and sales.

Deliveries of the modern GIRAFFE 4A ground-based multi-function system and the life extension of ARTHUR will create conditions for the Swedish Armed Forces’ long-range surveillance capability in the long term and give the defence new possibilities to handle existing and future threats. The work will take place at Saab in Gothenburg with deliveries from 2019.

ARTHUR and the GIRAFFE radar families are produced at Saab’s Gothenburg premises. Several of the company’s most advanced radar and sensor systems are produced there. Saab’s recent radar orders has included the sale of the advanced GlobalEye airborne surveillance solution to the United Arab Emirates and an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) X-band fighter array to the US government. The Sea GIRAFFE naval radar is currently selected for six US ship classes. The UK recently became the largest operator of Saab’s GIRAFFE radar and extended the support for ARTHUR.
