Germany Extends HERON Lease Contract

HERONs achieve 30,000 Operational Flight Hours

The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) is to operate its HERON UAVs in Afghanistan for a further year, until February 2018, reflecting its satisfaction with the type in service in Afghanistan. An additional lease contract with Airbus Defence & Space Airborne Solutions has been authorised, according to sources.

German HERONs operating in the Masar a Sharif area (where they have been active since 2010) recently achieved the milestone of 30,000 operational flight hours, demonstrating the IAI-manufactured drone’s diverse capabilities in both strategic and tactical tasking in difficult operating conditions. Israel Aerospace Industry’s (IAI) HERON has also served with success in Afghanistan with a number of other nations, notably Australia, Canada and France.

The Luftwaffe also currently operates HERON in support of UN Peacekeeping operations in Mali.
