Germany Approves Submarine Delivery to Egypt

Third of Four Boats to Complete Tests Before Handover

According to reports circulating in Germany and in Israel, the German Federal Security Council has approved delivery of the third of four Type 209 submarines to Egypt.

Built by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the Type 209/1400 submarine was launched at Kiel in May last year, when it was named S43. Sister boats S41 and S42 were delivered to the Egyptian Navy in December 2016 and August 2027, respectively, and the programme is expected to conclude with delivery of the fourth by the end of 2021. The first two 1,450t, 62m boats were placed under contract in 2011, with Egypt exercising an option for a further two units in 2015.

Additional approvals for execution of existing defence systems contracts given by the Council at the same time include the delivery of ammunition and detonators to Qatar by Rheinmetall, as part of a €179 million deal; an ASW aircraft to Pakistan from Rheinland Air Service; 72 IRIS-T missiles from Diehl Defence to the Philippines; and four SA’AR-class corvettes from thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to Israel. Unsurprisingly, Germany’s political left wing has taken the opportunity to strongly criticise government export policy, which it describes as ‘unscrupulous.’
