Germany and Belgium Request MK 54 Lightweight Torpedoes

64 and 29 Weapons Respectively

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of State Department approval for a potential sale to Germany of MK 54 Lightweight Torpedoes.

The German government has requested 64 MK 54 All-up Rounds, ten MK 54 conversion kits, to be used with fleet exercise sections as exercise torpedoes and related equipment, at an estimated cost of $130 million (€114 million). Also included are torpedo containers; recoverable exercise torpedoes (REXTORP) with containers; fleet exercise sections (FES) and fuel tanks to be used with MK 54 conversion kits; air launch accessories for fixed-wing; torpedo spare parts; training, publications, support and test equipment; US government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support.

The proposed sale will improve Germany’s capability to meet current and future threats by upgrading the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of its P-3C aircraft.  The principal contractor will be Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, Portsmouth, RI.

At the same time, the US has approved a request from the government of Belgium for 29 MK 54 Mod 0 torpedoes at an estimated cost of $33.3 million.
